mimoOn integrates LTE protocol stack software on Cavium\'s advanced OCTEON processor for wireless infrastructure
Duisburg, 11 February 2009: mimoOn GmbH, a leader in software defined radio solutions for advanced wireless standards, today announced the integration of its LTE basestation protocol stack, “mi!Infra”, on Cavium Networks’ OCTEON MIPS64 multicore processor family. Cavium Networks is a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, storage, wireless, security and video applications
mi!Infra is fully featured and certified based on the Release 8 36.3XX series specifications from 3GPP. The software is written in high level language and is in modular form so it is easy to modify or customize even after being deployed – an important feature as the standards for the protocol layers continue to be revised.
The OCTEON processor family offers high performance, extremely low power consumption, and headroom for packet and protocol processing applications and service deployments. It offers the choices of up to 16 custom 64-bit cnMIPS core devices, operating at 300-800MHz frequencies with multiple software and processor options. The family also provides integrated up to 2MB L2 cache, QoS, TCP, packet and security coprocessing in hardware with a rich set of interfaces such as TDM/PCM, multiple Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, XAUI, PCI or PCI Express, and USB 2.0.
“Cavium is a leader in wireless infrastructure silicon and their OCTEON processors have been selected in all major Top Tier OEMs, while mimoOn has been the first in the world to offer an end-to-end MIMO LTE software solution on flexible, upgradeable platforms,” stated Thomas Kaiser, CEO of mimoOn. “This hardware-software combination delivers a proven turnkey solution to infrastructure manufacturers that allows fast time-to-market, reduced bill-of-materials, and the ability to evolve with future base station market requirements.”
“mimoOn is a leading and proven LTE stack provider and is well positioned to serve leading edge base station vendors and operators targeting initial LTE rollout in 2009,” said YJ Kim, Senior Director, Embedded Processor Group at Cavium Networks. “mimoOn’s LTE software and Cavium’s OCTEON processor with built-in LTE hardware acceleration will provide a compelling and complete LTE system design to our common customers worldwide” .
